“Your Special Day” Crap, I man Trap.

I detest the phrase, “your special day”.  Whenever I see a photographer say those words, they get put at the bottom of the imaginary barrel in my mind.  It’s just fluff words that vendors use to appease brides.

This brings me to a rant on weddings.  I won’t deny, I am not a romantic.  I have not been planning my wedding day since I was a little girl.  I’d like to think no one in my generation and after does, but I’m probably wrong.  I have no qualms about those who do plan their weddings as a child.  It’s not their fault, they’re only a child.  How can you not?  You’re a little girl, raised on Disney princess movies, and you go to a wedding where you’re the flower girl in a pretty princess dress, and out comes the bride in an even prettier princess dress.  The entire day is focused on her, everyone loves her, and you get to take your own picture with her and ride in the limo with her.  It’s all very exciting.

But, there comes a point where people need to realize what a wedding is.  It’s about marriage.  It’s a ceremony and celebration for the start of a marriage.  Marriage, btw, was originally a sign of possession change.  Yeah, that’s why the father of the bride is handing his daughter off, he’s passing on his possession of his daughter to the possession the groom.  Property is what women were.

I love weddings where the couple doesn’t fall into that trap of “special day”.  You don’t need to spend tens of thousands of dollars for your wedding if it’s going to set you painfully back.  Weddings are a fun day, where everyone is there to watch you get married, and then have fun celebrating it with you.  Get creative, have games, make it personal, but don’t freak out when it doesn’t go perfect.  What in life is perfect?  Flow with the disasters, they make for great stories later.  In the end, it’s just one day of many many days of one year of many many years of your life.
